Our 1st day in Kodiak we decide to ask the locals about the areas fishing, and since i have never been to the island before thought it was a good idea. And being that we were not goin to pay for charters it seemed wise.We were directed to a few spots among them where the Buskin river, the American river and a place called somtimes island funny enough it is named so because during high tide it is a island.

our first stop was the american river which is located a few mines outside of the Kodiak township. After a short drive we arrived to find the river packed with and selection of sockeye, silver, pink and chum salmon.I guess thats the advantage of flying to kodiak in mid-july to fish.being that i was wanting to pack light i brought my St.Croix 9 weight fly rod.I picked the 9 weight because now that the king season was over i figured i had no fear of breaking it.
The day was very eventfull and since we were catch and releasing i no problem not being able to fish due to a bag limit.I decided to bring along a wide variety of flies ranging from egg patterns to flash flies. But what severd me best was a fly i discovered during my summer i spent along the alagnak ,which is located in the Katmai national park.the fly is made up of red and blaze orange feathers and has a two part body with a dumbell weight at the head "if i can find it will post a picture of it" which worked the best.
our second day i fished the buskin river which is located by the kodiak air port ,it was stocked with mainly pink salmon which are a blast to catch but not my favorite to eat.i prefere sockeyes and silvers for the quality of meat and taste.Pink salmon or more commonly know here as humpys usually run the thickest.i have been to some fishing holes where u cant help but snag em when you reel in.
i was useing the same flies as the day before .But that morning i realized i did not have enough tied up so i went down to the only fishing shop in town and found a close match to what i have been using, after buying them out we headded down to the fishing spot.Once agian our day way very eventfull the water was about the same as the American river but much narrower so i required much less effort to get to the fish. This trip out their were many other people on the water fishing . I not liking to combat fish wadded down river a bit to have some privacy ,i was landing pinks with every cast and the fish were giving me good fights.I was fishing a pretty basic fishing pattern by casting slightly up river of a school of pinks and slowly drifting my fly into the school.it was working quiet well lol to well i guess because i caught the attention of a older couple out fishing with the grandkids. As the couple watched me catch fish after fish i knew the old timer was wanting to talk with me by the way he looked. And so after a while he walked down to the water and watched me flyfish. He catches my eye and asks me what i am useing he says they are having no luck.i respectfully show the guy my flies and he comments that the local shop did not stock such item.i laugh and say because i bought them all,I ask him if they were using a spin cast rod instead of a fly and he say yes.So i reach into my pack a give him a few while telling him how to fish them.
Before long i can hear the sounds of victroy from the youngsters as the began catchin fish.
